In response to the COVID19 pandemic, the NKR has implemented comprehensive PCR and antibody testing solutions for donors, recipients and healthcare workers. These solutions are available to all transplant centers, including those
programs that are not currently NKR Member Centers, as well as all transplant organ types.
PCR Swab Test
This nasal swab test requires the transplant center to send samples via FedEx or courier to Viracor’s lab. This test can be used for all donors and recipients, across all organ systems, for both living and deceased donor
transplants. Standard test results are typically reported within 18 hours of the receipt of the samples.
Centers can utilize the STAT A test to test recipients of deceased donor organs. This nasal swab test utilizes same-day courier service with results typically reported within 24 hours of sample pickup. When a STAT A order
is requested, an email will be sent to our courier vendor with the center contact information. The transplant center is immediately contacted for pickup time/location. If a charter flight is required to achieve a 24-hour
turnaround, the courier will quote a price and must get email authorization from the transplant center for the additional cost of the charter.
Centers can utilize the STAT B test for living donors and recipients 2 days prior to surgery as a final COVID check prior to surgery. This nasal swab test requires the transplant center to overnight samples to the lab
utilizing the STAT turnaround time of 6 hours, once samples arrive at the lab. For example, if a donor/recipient is scheduled for surgery on Wednesday, the donor/recipient would be swabbed on Monday and the results would
then come back Tuesday, minimizing the potential for infection between testing on Monday and surgery on Wednesday.
This nasal swab test can be used for high-volume research projects at a reduced rate.
All results made be reported to the patient's local health department.
Viracor will call the patient's department of health based on the address entered into the NKR system.
Only POSITIVE samples will be sent to the CDC, unless otherwise requested.
Testing is performed on nasal passageway collections.
Standard test samples must be sent directly via overnight courier (morning delivery) to Viracor.
The NKR is not providing a return shipping label to Viracor for the PCR samples; the Member Center is responsible for return shipping.
Viracor's lab address is on the kit and Viracor's Client Services number: 1-800-305-5198
Turnaround time for standard test results is 12-18 hours from receipt of the sample at Viracor.
STAT A samples will be picked up by the NORA courier same-day service.
Turnaround time for STAT test results are targeted for 24 hours (not guaranteed) from pickup of the sample. Charter flights can be ordered to expedite turnaround time.
The PCR samples must be tested within 4 days of the date/time of collection.
Test results will be delivered digitally via the existing NKR serology platform.

Between 48-96 hours
1 swab per kit with 10 kits in every 1 box ordered from the NKR
The COVID antibody test has been added to the NKR routine donor serology testing process.
The antibody test can be ordered utilizing the NKR home blood draw service. The home draw antibody test can be used for donors and recipients regardless of organ type, healthcare workers and any patients (including
non-transplant patients) in need of this test. The home draw ordering function can be found under the COVID testing button on the center home page and utilizes our National Phlebotomy Network for the draws.
The antibody tests can be shipped directly to the hospital where the blood draws can be performed using hospital staff. The antibody test can be used for donors and recipients regardless of organ type, healthcare workers
and any patients (including non-transplant patients) in need of this test. The ordering function can be found under the COVID Testing button on the center home page.
This antibody test can be used for high volume research projects at a reduced rate.
2 mL (0.5 mL minimum)
Collect whole blood in a SST, red top, or tiger-top serum tube.
Centrifuge and transfer 2 mL serum to sterile, scre top tube.
Samples are stable refrigerated for 3 days or longer when frozen.
Recommend shipping samples frozen.

Donors are requesting remote donation to avoid traveling to a distant city for donation surgery to minimize the risk of COVID infection. The following remote donation services are available allowing donors to avoid
The Advanced Donation Program (ADP) allows a living kidney donor to choose the most convenient location and time frame for their kidney donation surgery, providing one or more vouchers to people who can then be
prioritized to receive a living donor kidney through the National Kidney Registry if/when they need a transplant.
Remote Kidney Paired Donation allows donors to donate their kidney on behalf of a paired recipient at a transplant center close to the donor, reducing the risk of COVID exposure related to traveling. The
transplanted organ is shipped to the recipient’s transplant center through our proven logistics systems.
Remote Direct Donation allows donors to donate their kidney at a transplant center close to home, reducing the risk of COVID exposure related to traveling. The kidney is shipped to the recipient’s transplant
center through our proven logistics systems.
All costs related to NKR’s COVID solutions are listed in the Member Center Terms and Conditions.
