General Health Guidelines for Living Donation
The following are generally-accepted requirements for living kidney donation:
- good general health
- normal kidney function
- age 25 to 70 years (exceptions are made)
- insurance coverage
Conditions that may exclude a person from becoming a living donor:
- hypertension requiring medication
- kidney disease
- obesity (BMI > 35%)
- certain infectious diseases, such as AIDS
- some forms of diabetes
- some forms of cancer
- some forms of heart disease
- ongoing drug abuse
- some forms of hepatitis
- some forms of psychiatric problems
- kidney stones
